Every individual no matter the region of
the world they live in, their sexual orientation, religion or race
should have the rights to live freely. We must first start right
here, in our backyard, the United States (U.S) and maybe we can
become the model country for other countries; for this is a global
wide issue.
Although, homosexual are treated better
in the U.S than other countries, we still have a long ways to go in
allocating them their full liberty to live their lives the way they
choose. For example, The “Don't Ask, Don't Tell” policy that
prevented gays, lesbians and bisexuals from openly serving in the
military was effective from 1993 to 2011 when it was banned. Even
though the ban is lifted, homosexuals are still discriminated against
when they are open up about their sexual orientation. In spite of
the fact that the U.S is taking tiny steps into the right direction,
I feel one day we will get there. We only have nine states out of
fifty that has legalize same-sex marriages which are Massachusetts,
New York, Vermont, Maine, Maryland, Connecticut, Iowa, Washington,
New Hampshire and Washington D.C while other states are still
reluctant to even pass bills granting them the same right as
heterosexual.

Why should homosexuals have the right to marry one another? In other countries they might be killed or jailed for being openly gay. In America (depending on location) they are able to live free and be in a relationship? Isn't that enough? Isn't loving one another enough. What really makes someone married? A piece of paper?
ReplyDeleteI am not an advocate of same sex marriages however I do believe that all people should be allowed to live freely. Is this not the land of the free? Does freedom have it's limitations? Then we cannot truly call it freedom can we? Marriage is also about constructing a life together and there are many rights that are denied to those that are not married. Immigration rights is one of those. No matter how much love there is there are benefits that come with a couple being married.

ReplyDeleteThe right to live freely is ours at birth. But, do we really live freely? Homosexuals need to hide their preferences and women are still treated as second class citizens in many countries. In the workplace women may do the same job as a man, but they receive less money. Why?
The way to truly live freely is to respect others. As a society, we give rights to others according to our expectations or beliefs. As the article mentioned, “the U.S.A. is a role model for other countries.” But, as a country we still have a long way to go when handling issues like education, homosexuality, racial differences, religious beliefs, and immigration. In order to allow them to feel free, we need to accept them, learn from them, and teach them when necessary. In my opinion, the homosexual community should not need to hide their preferences; immigrants shouldn’t need to hide their identities; and people of different races shouldn’t be discriminated for their heritage.
Lakeisha, I wrote about the same topic as you did and I completely agree with you when you talk about United States needing to step up and set up the example for other countries. The United States is a country that a lot of other countries look up to and if homosexuality is acceptable in the United States, I am sure that will make other countries rethink their own laws. Discrimination against homosexual people is a real problem in the United States and is a problem that we need to address now. It has been too long. We cannot just keep ignoring the problem because it is not going to go away. Homosexuality is not like flu that you have it one week and then goes away the next. People do not choose to be homosexual. That just the way they are born. If they could choose what to be, I am sure that no one would want to be homosexual, especially not after we have seen the way we as society treat them. They do not deserve to be treated that way because they are humans like the rest of us, they should have the same rights as we do. They have feelings too and I’m sure that they would like to be able to form a family unit just like the rest of the people. So why not give them that chance. It will not hurt anybody and it will make a lot of people happy. So let them make people happy by allowing gay marriage to be legal in the United States.
